Actuary, Jack, tells us about his path through the Actuarial Academy and why, after almost five years, he’s still excited to come to work every day.

I joined LV= five years ago. I’d completed my maths degree and I was keen to start the path to becoming an Actuary. One of the main reasons I wanted to join LV= was because of their Actuarial Academy and its rotation programme, where you move to different roles every 12-24 months. The whole point is to create well-rounded people who can help the organisation and ultimately, its members, in whatever way is best suited to their skills. I’ve now worked in four different roles, testing myself in a variety of different situations. I definitely feel supported here – it’s full of opportunities if you’re willing to ask for them.

If you want to learn and develop your skill set, the support is there. And, if you build your own personal brand well within the organisation then you’ll get plenty of opportunities to shine. I wanted to be in a position where, when it comes to the actuarial rotation programme, senior managers are pitching to have me in their team because I’ve proven myself. I think the best way to prove yourself is to be yourself, and the more yourself you are here, the more successful you are. I like making things happen – for LV= and for the benefit of our current members and future customers. Everything I do really feels like it could make a difference.

I’m excited to come to work every day, wherever that is. I work from where I need to – it could be an external agency, in our London office, in Bournemouth, or working from home. You’re treated like a grown up here and given the flexibility you need to do the best job possible. You’re trusted to make an impact and deliver results, so if you need to work from home every now and then, or change your hours, that’s fine.

We support people because we want to support people, not because it drives new business sales or meets external targets. I really feel there’s the opportunity to feel warm and fuzzy when you leave work to go home each night. The bottom line for LV= is always doing the right thing for our members. We have life-long relationships with our customers and help them through the toughest times. You don’t want to have to claim on your life insurance or your critical illness insurance, but when you do it should be as pleasurable an experience as possible and there should be support points throughout your relationship that enable you to do the right thing for yourself. That’s why the Life and Pensions business is different – we make decisions for the benefit of members rather than solely for improved profit. We have 1.25 million members – if we can make a difference to them, we make a difference to society. As an organisation, we’re uniquely placed to do that.
