Your curiosity will shape our future

Rachel McGann, training specialist at our Hitchin office, tells us about her role at LV=

Following her time at university, Rachel worked in the IT industry as a Software Engineer and Database Designer. After a career break to raise her young children, Rachel retrained as a primary school teacher and progressed up to head of humanities. She also mentored students and newly qualified teachers.

Looking for a career change, Rachel then joined LV= in 2021 as a Customer Service Representative. Rachel recently moved into her new role as a Training Specialist.

What does your day-to-day role look like?
My day is always varied. You might see me running a training course, developing an online training module, carrying out new starter inductions – or meeting with teams in the wider business to capture training requirements. There’s something new every day.

Some of my work is independent, but there’s a lot of joined up working with two other training specialists based at our Bournemouth and Exeter offices.

What advice would you give someone looking to do a job like yours?
You need to be comfortable talking in front of varied groups of people. You also need to be adaptable, have really good organisational skills and be a great listener. Most of all you need to have a real love of learning and want to share that with others.

What have you enjoyed most in your role so far?
I’ve really enjoyed running training sessions, whether in-person or virtually. Learning how to build online training modules has also been really interesting and I’m working with a friendly and supportive team which is great. This role has also given me the opportunity to connect with other people across LV= and learn more about what we do.

What other role within LV= could you see yourself doing?
I love training, mentoring and coaching people so I feel like I’m really suited to my current role. If I did have a different role in the future, I’d like it to incorporate those elements too.

For a work meeting, what’s your drink of choice?
Normally, it’s a flat white but I’m quite partial to a mocha too.

Outside work, what do you enjoy doing?
Going to the cinema, reading and long walks with the family and our dog. I also like to crochet and knit, build Lego with my kids, play the tin whistle and I’m also learning to speak Irish (Gaeilge).
