From sitting in a classroom to joining the LV= team

23-year-old Declan joined LV= four years ago, almost straight after finishing his A-Levels. He tells us why he loves his job and how he’s one of the longest serving Customer Service Representatives in our Huddersfield office.
Please tell us all about you and your current role at LV=
I’m Declan, I’m 23 years old and I’ve been working at LV= for four years. I’m currently one of the longest serving CSRs in the Huddersfield Motor Service department. I started off as a part-time CSR working from 5pm until 9pm and then after about a year I decided to make my job role full-time and started working from 11:30am until 8pm Monday to Friday.
You joined LV= after finishing your A-Levels – what made you decide to go straight into work?
I did consider going to university after college, but I was ready to get out of the classroom and start earning my own money. After a couple of months thinking about it, I took the plunge and decided to look for a job once I left college. It was tough to find a job because I had no experience in any sort of role at all – it took me more than one application to LV= before I got a job here.
What sort of opportunities were you looking forward to at LV=?
The main opportunity for me was earning that experience and finding out what it was like having a job! It also gave me the opportunity to face a very different type of challenge – going from a student sitting in a classroom to working for one of the biggest companies in the UK. Even after four years of doing the job, there are still things that come up that I haven’t dealt with before. So you’re always learning on the job, which keeps things fresh and interesting.
What type of work have you been involved in? What’s been your favourite project?
While I’m usually on the phones, it’s not always ‘business as usual’. I’ve been involved in a couple of different projects with LV=. One that immediately comes to mind was working with Children in Need in 2015. The Huddersfield office was selected as one of the call centres to take pledges on the night. There were a large number of applicants as people really wanted to get involved with this – and I was one of the lucky ones to get selected. Everyone was given an LV= Children in Need t-shirt to wear on the night and lots of pizza! I think it’s great that a big company like LV= finds the time to get involved in charity.
What is your support network like at LV=?
Fantastic! The support is always there when you need it and we have a number of team leaders who are available to assist in any way they can.
What would you say to someone considering applying to LV= who has just finished their A-Levels?
Whether you have experience in this line of work or none at all, LV= will always consider everyone that applies for the job. LV= will give you the opportunity to develop your skills, not just as a person but as a Customer Service Advisor at one of the biggest companies in the UK. There are always opportunities to move up to a higher job role and the support that you’ll receive while working here will make that happen in no time at all. Not only that, you’ll also be surrounded by great people who will always be willing to help you whenever you need it.
