Meet Steve Wright, National Protection Consultant

Steve Wright, national protection consultant tells us about his role at LV=
I first joined LV= in 2015 as a protection adviser, giving advice to LV= members and new customers on a range of protection needs including critical illness, income protection and business protection. I was then welcomed back in 2018 as a protection consultant and my role involves supporting firms and financial advisers to gain more protection business.

What does your day-to-day role look like?
An average day for me includes lots of interaction with advisers and I do everything from helping them understand our protection offering to delivering product training. I also support colleagues across the business with technical questions around products, criteria and our processes.

What advice would you give someone looking to do a job like yours?
A big part of the role is managing and building successful relationships with financial advisers – while also being an expert in everything protection. To be knowledgeable on protection products, our own and our competitors. I would also advise finding common ground early in conversations as advisers speak with lots of companies each day. A memorable discussion can set strong foundations for future relationships.

What have you enjoyed most in your role so far?
Since coming into this role, I have learnt so much about the industry – from provider products to different networks, it’s continuous learning. However, what I enjoy most is taking a firm that is struggling to write protection – helping them to develop processes and questioning techniques to achieve the outcome of protecting more families and growing their business.

What other role within LV= could you see yourself doing?
I would move into a product management role as I enjoy researching providers and would love to make a difference by looking at what products, benefits or features we could bring to market. I’d also maintain my joy for training and development by running sessions with the sales team, drilling down our unique selling points against other providers and vice versa.

Outside work, what do you enjoy doing?
I love spending time with my family. I have a three year old and another child on the way so my spare time is spent doing lots of family activities from dog walking, swimming to bike rides.
